HISTORY
- The African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas congregation was founded in 1792 by Absalom Jones, Richard Allen, and others as a response to the outgrowing Free African Society that was formed in 1787
- The church was built in 1899 and designed by Frederick Mann
- The original church was constructed at 5th and Adelphi St then moved to a few other locations ending up in its current spot at Overbrook and Lancaster Avenues in Overbrook Farms, Philadelphia
- Throughout its years of service, it has become a hub of social service and social justice playing a key role in antislavery
