HISTORY

  • “Mother” Bethel A.M.E. Church was founded in 1793 by Richard Allen and others as a response to all the hatred Black Americans dealt with in surrounding churches after a walkout from their previous churches
  • Richard Allen was a former slave who bought their freedom in 1783 and soon after started to preach is buried in the basement of the church
  • The current standing Victorian Romanesque Revival church, built in 1889 and designed by Hazlehurst & Huckel, was the 3rd church built on the site for the parish
  • There was a tunnel that connected the church to the Friends Meeting House at 4th and Arch that was used as a part of the “underground railroad”
  • Added to the NRHP March 16, 1972
